Avid readers know how a well-written book can transport you to another time and place. Enjoying a fictional story or the telling of a real-life event can be both entertaining and educational. But how do authors get from an idea for a book to an actual published title?

Area residents can get a rare glimpse into the inspiration and creative process of the publishing world at the 21st Annual Authors’ Luncheon, benefiting Saint Martin’s Ministries (SMM), Ridgley. The event will be held Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Prospect Bay Country Club, 311 Prospect Bay Drive W, Grasonville.

– Eric L. Motley, Ph.D., executive vice president of The Aspen Institute, Washington, D.C., and author who will share his memoir Madison Park, A Place of Hope telling the story of the small community he grew up in Montgomery, AL, that was founded in 1880 by a group of freed slaves.

– Katherine Winfield, resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and author of the Corsica Series, mystery novels set on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (some say it is based on Centreville, Md.). The most recent book is Belle Grove, and first in the series is Haverford House.

Tickets for the Authors’ Luncheon are $90.00 per person and include lunch, a silent auction, book signings, authors’ presentations and a question and answer session. Proceeds from the event will support St. Martin’s four assistance programs including an Emergency Food Pantry, a Transitional Shelter, Homelessness Prevention and a Thrift Store. The Authors’ Luncheon has become an increasingly popular fundraiser for Saint Martin’s since its inception 21 years ago. “The event not only provides an opportunity to meet noted authors, but also serves as a great time to mingle and bid in our silent auction, all for a good cause,” says Deborah Hudson Vornbrock, SMM executive director. “Board member Diane Pappas has done an amazing job on planning this year’s event. We are grateful for the faithful generosity of all of our friends who have supported Saint Martin’s through this event,” she adds.

Saint Martin’s is a non-profit organization that has provided a safety net for individuals and families living in poverty for more than three decades. SMM’s mission is to help meet basic human needs for impoverished people on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, to respect and affirm their dignity, and to address the root problems that perpetuate the cycle of poverty. SMM provides an array of services through a single point of entry, with a dignified case management approach, to address immediate and long-term needs. Its four assistance programs are its Food Pantry, Homelessness Prevention, Transitional Shelter and Thrift Store.
