Come join in a fun night of art-making in the alley as Main Street Gallery, Cambridge’s only artist-run co-op, celebrates its’ 6th anniversary on second Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 5-8 pm.

The gallery and the alley are located at 518 Poplar St. and guests can channel their inner artist by taking part in an “anything goes” collaborative painting or by trying their hand at drawing with colored chalks on the wall! There will also be a dynamic demo by painter Kathy Flament of her “Paint Toss” technique. The fun continues inside the gallery where guests can have refreshments while enjoying the works of the gallery’s 13 members plus the art of many former members who were invited back to join in the celebration!

Main Street Gallery co-op began six years ago when an eclectic group of artists took the baton from the original Main Street Gallery, which operated under Cambridge Main Street, and started the city’s only artist-run cooperative. Keeping the original Main Street name and its’ location on Muir St., the group elected a board of directors and set about owning and running the gallery. “We have thrived in a positive environment thanks to a wonderful group of artists” says the current assistant director, Linda Starling. “Our artists have exhibited an outstanding spirit of cooperation, and that’s what you need to run a co-op” she continues. “There have been challenges over these six years for sure, but we have been able to meet them and here we are still going strong!”

The past six years have seen the gallery move twice finally settling in its’ current location at 518 Poplar St. and it has seen new members come and others go. “Our celebratory exhibit called “Six Years and Counting” will be a kind of homecoming,” according to Starling. “We’ve invited all our former members to hang a work with us. We are very excited to see old friends, each of whom is an integral part of our gallery’s history, and we’re looking forward to seeing their new work”.

“Six Years and Counting” will run from September 1 through October 30, 2016. In addition to the gala reception on second Saturday, September 9, there will be a second reception on second Saturday, October 14 from 5-8 pm. Both receptions are free and open to the public.
