Screen Painting by John Iampieri

Screen Painting by John Iampieri

John R. Iampieri is a visual artist interested in sharing the magical, very functional art form of screen painting. Growing up in Baltimore, he experienced seeing hand-painted screens everywhere in many Baltimore row house neighborhoods. He is a member of the Baltimore Painted Screen Society, and has traveled throughout Maryland teaching this 104-year-old folk art. He is a roster member with the Maryland State Arts Council and a roster member of Young Audiences of Maryland, enabling him to teach in schools throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware using 21st century and common core curriculum standards. John is also a member of several art leagues throughout Delaware and Maryland and works with many charitable organizations donating screens for fundraisers.

In windows, screen doors, wall hangings, and as porch enclosures, John’s paintings are commissioned worldwide, and frequently exhibited in numerous venues including museums, libraries, businesses, books, magazines, newspapers, movies, and television.  John hand paints all of his screens, using tear resistant Super Screen material unless otherwise requested. He can paint on any type of screen any size from one square foot to 40-foot screened-in porches!

As a side note, John will be returning to DCA for a one-day screen painting workshop on Sunday, October 15, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Students will learn the history, tools, techniques, and functionality of the art form, and create their own personalized screen. This workshop is a perfect multigenerational activity, fun for both children and adults. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. All supplies are included and provided by the instructor. Contact DCA for registration information.

Also in the galleries for September are the mixed media paintings of Tara Funk Grimm. A signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Tara is an award-winning artist whose work has been featured in numerous publications and exhibits. Tara’s passion for the visual world and the world of imagination has led to both plein air painting and creative exploration in the studio. She finds each painting to be a journey into the unknown, where the heart and mind become one with inspiration, imagination, and materials.

“It is the world of endless possibilities and discovery that beckons me”, says Tara. “With plein air, I try to capture the essence of the place based on what I am feeling, seeing, and what is going on around me. I push colors and exaggerate natural movements. More imaginative paintings begin in my studio. My method of working with mixed media has evolved as a result of experience, intuition, and exploration. Through layering and weaving acrylic with a wide variety of handmade and altered papers and found fabrics, I open the doorway to a journey into the imagination. Intuitive choices, thoughts, and ideas are expanded and the many layers provide pathways to invention, innovation, and discovery.”

Tara’s work involves layers of acrylic, handmade and found altered papers, and fabrics applied to a canvas surface. Each paint or collage layer is sealed with gloss medium before applying the next layer, creating great visual depth in the surface and areas in the painting that reveal the many layers below.
Second Saturday Artists’ Reception will be held on September 9 from 5 – 7:30 p.m. with classical guitar music by Victoria Tarbutton, a screen painting talk by John Iampieri, and light refreshments. Several of the DCA class instructors will be on hand as well with demos and exhibits of some of their work. As a special feature, the evening will honor the 50th Anniversary of the Maryland State Arts Council. For more information on programs and activities at DCA call 410-228-7782, or visit online at dorchesterarts.org.
