Dorchester Center for the Arts bids farewell to August in a fine display of activities to fill the weekend. Final Fridays Coffeehouse Open Mic returns Friday August 25, 2017 7:00-9:00 p.m. Admission is free, with coffee, tea, sodas, and wine available for purchase. All are welcome to come out and experience this friendly supportive atmosphere for acoustic musicians, poets, storytellers, and other folkies. Those interested in sharing their talents with the community are invited to call 410-228-7782 to be added to the lineup. The coffeehouse will return on September 29 and October 27, 2017
Saturday evening the fun returns with Sharon Gilroy in a one-woman variety show “Once, Twice, Three Times – a Lady???” This Gallery Stage performance features monologues, memories, and music. Lots of laughter guaranteed! $10 DCA members, $12 non-members. Call DCA to charge by phone: 410-228-7782 or stop by 321 High Street. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. A “Dinner and Show Special” will be offered at High Spot Restaurant before the performance, and includes two tickets to the show along with a special menu featuring choice of one appetizer, choice of two soup or salad, choice of two suppers, and choice of one dessert from the dessert menu. Sunday offers up an afternoon of Drumming and Dance Rhythms in the George B. Todd Performance Hall from 1:00-4:00 p.m. as Baba Dennis Minus presents Afro-Caribbean Culture through the Arts. Workshops will be offered in basic, intermediate, and advanced African drum and dance patterns for both youth and adults. This program is sponsored by Alpha Genesis Community Development Corp. and supported by funds from DCA through the Maryland State Arts Council.Starting in September, it’s “back to school” at DCA, with a full schedule of instructional arts in a broad range of media and technique for all levels of artists. This just might be the time to polish up those skills or try your hand at something completely new. Knitting for Everyone instructed by advanced fiber artist Windy Karpavage is held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and open to the beginner through the more experienced knitter. Classes are ongoing. Stained Glass for Beginners and Intermediates begins on Tuesday September 12, with two 10-week sessions: 4:00-6:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Elissa Crouch will instruct Traditional Rug Hooking: Pretty Paisleys to be held on Thursday mornings, 9:00 a.m. starting September 14. Intro to Drawing for Young People and Adults is a new class for ages 16 and up, instructed by Robert Gladney. This class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning September 19. Intermediate Watercolor with Barbara Zuehlke begins on Wednesday September 20, 1:00-3:30 p.m., followed by Oil Painting for Beginners and Intermediates with Tom Ryan beginning Tuesday mornings, 9:00 a.m. to noon on September 26. Master carver Warren Saunders will offer Decoy Carving for All on Wednesday evenings, 6:00-9:00 p.m. beginning September 13.
