Dover, DE – Throughout the summer, the Biggs Museum will continue the celebration of its 25th Silver Anniversary with an impressive slate of exhibitions for visitors to enjoy. Exhibitions currently on view include: Rembrandt’s Etchings, Delaware Discoveries: Girlhood Embroidery, 1750-1850, Delaware Division of the Arts Award Winners XVIII, and Milton Downing: Moral Assembly. Details on each exhibition can be found below.
“In addition to our permanent collection, if visitors drop by before July 8th, they will have a unique opportunity to view four amazing exhibitions,” shared Charles Guerin, Executive Director of the Biggs Museum. “We are proud of the sterling exhibition schedule for our 25th Silver Anniversary which currently includes everything from girlhood Samplers from the 1700s, to work from contemporary Delaware artists, to an exhibition of original etchings from the legendary Rembrandt. To say we have something for everyone this summer is an understatement.”
Visitors are raving about the current exhibitions on view at the Biggs Museum. One visitor on Trip Advisor recently shared their experience: “Don’t pass this by while visiting Dover. [The Biggs is a] beautiful museum with 3 floors of interesting exhibits. We enjoyed the School Sampler works and the Rembrandt works of art.”
Additionally, for 2018 only, the Biggs Museum is offering a special $25 individual membership for NEW members (regularly $40). Biggs Museum members receive free admission to the museum – including its feature exhibitions, discounts on programs and more. Also, Child HELP Foundation Gallery will be stocked with free activities for children that coordinate with our current exhibitions, all throughout the summer.

Rembrandt’s Etchings
Open through July 8th
Rembrandt, one of the most influential printmakers in the history of art, created etchings that offer a wide range of subjects. How can one be sure that a Rembrandt is truly by THE Rembrandt? In an exploration of this question, this exhibition of 40 Rembrandt etchings examines the problem of authenticating Rembrandt’s etchings. It includes original prints from the artist’s lifetime as well as re-strike prints and copies from the 17th to 20th centuries.
Delaware Discoveries: Girlhood Embroidery, 1750-1850
Open through July 22nd
The Biggs Museum will honor the upcoming publication of Delaware Discoveries: Girlhood Embroidery, 1750-1850, the definitive study of Delaware girlhood samplers of the 18th and 19th centuries, with an exhibition of historic needlework. The exhibition features over 100 antique samplers and other forms of embroidery from all three counties in Delaware with a special emphasis on debuting the work of little-known schools of needlework instruction.
DDOA Award Winners XVIII
Open through July 22nd
The annual Award Winners exhibition features the talent of the Delaware Division of the Arts (DDOA) Individual Artist Fellows. The Fellows are recommended by out-of-state jurors based on the high quality of their artwork and receive Delaware State Arts Council approval. Each year, the Biggs Museum invites the award winners to the only group exhibition honoring their combined accomplishments in visual and media arts, literature, and music.
Milton Downing: Moral Assembly
Open through July 22nd
Assemblage artist, Milton Downing, gathers pieces of discarded clothing and other found objects into painted compositions that reveal a wide range of human experiences. His subjects, regardless of their backgrounds, are elevated through an expressive use of color and enlivened through the artist’s gestural use of paint.
