Beef Producers Short Course in Queen Anne’s County

Queen Anne's

The University of Maryland Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, in partnership with University of Maryland Extension, is hosting a two-day Beef Producers Short-Course on September 14-15, 2018, at the Wye Research and Education Center (WREC), 2016 Carmichael Road, Queenstown, Md. Participants will partake in classroom presentations and hands-on experiential activities with the Wye Angus herd.

The Wye Angus cattle are a unique herd, donated to the University of Maryland Foundation in 1979 by the original owner of the Wye plantation, Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Because this herd is a closed genetic population, managed by the staff at the WREC, it is the ideal herd for research studies in breeding, genetics, health, nutrition, best care practices and more.

The short-course is designed for both beginning and experienced cattle farmers and will focus on topics such as determining daily operating costs, understanding EPDs, Veterinary Feed Directive, body condition scoring, forage sampling and storage, nutrient management, pasture management, as well as many others.

The class format is two, half-days starting on Friday afternoon and again on Saturday morning. A full class schedule of both days is available online, along with an application, which all participants must fill out, at https://go.umd.edu/Uoy. The cost is $75 per person, and enrollment is limited to 30 people. Applications are due on September 7 and attendees will be notified of their application status no later than September 12, 2018.

Additional Beef Producer short-courses will be held in Washington County at the Western Maryland Research and Education Center on Nov. 2-3, and in Baltimore County on January 25-26, 2019.
