ST MICHAELS, MD – Sam Hilgartner of Baltimore, Md., has joined the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum as a shipwright apprentice.
Hilgartner comes to CBMM from the Arques School of Traditional Boatbuilding in Sausalito, Calif., where he was both an apprentice and an instructor. His work experience includes four years with the National Park Service at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, and time spent as a professional rigger in New England and the Netherlands. He also holds a 100-ton Masters license.
Hilgartner enjoys sailing, and has spent time aboard tall ships like Pride of Baltimore II and Picton Castle. His volunteer experience includes work at Oakland Free University and the Bay Area Public School.
Hilgartner is now part of CBMM’s shipyard crew responsible for the restoration of 1889 bugeye Edna Lockwood, a National Historic Landmark and queen of the floating fleet. This is the final year of the historic restoration project, with her re-launch scheduled for OysterFest on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.
