Salisbury – High school basketball players from near and far will be traveling to Wicomico County next week for the Governor’s Challenge basketball tournament, sponsored by The Bank of Delmarva. It’s the largest holiday basketball tournament in the country.
In its 38th year, the event will bring nearly 120 teams to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and surrounding high schools from Dec. 26-29. A new event, the Shore Hoops Alumni Classic, will take place this Saturday, Dec. 22.
This year’s Governor’s Challenge format will include a DMVelite Showcase division, a girls’ showcase division, a varsity boys’ division and a varsity girls’ division.
The tournament also features:
– Wednesday, Dec. 26, 8:30 p.m.: Delmarva Power Skills Challenge and Cricket Wireless Three-Point Contest
– Friday, Dec. 28, 9 p.m.: Cricket Wireless Three-Point Contest, followed by the M&T Bank Slam Dunk Contest

Kids ages 11 and under are admitted free.
Fees may apply to ticket prices. Tickets are available online, by phone at 410-548-4911, or in person at the box office, located at 500 Glen Ave. in Salisbury. The box office will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Shore Hoops Alumni Classic
The Shore Hoops Alumni Classic, set for this Saturday, will feature some of the Bayside Conference’s best teams dating back to 2000. The event will start at 1 p.m. at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center.
The schedule includes state championship team matchups, a North vs. South Bayside Legends Alumni All Star Game and an All Star Three Point Contest. Tickets will be available on-site and are $10 per person for ages 12 and up and free for kids ages 11 and under.
