Easton – This summer, Talbot County Government is offering a number of opportunities for youth to experience new things – from sports clinics to summer camp, to field trips outside the area, to aviation drone camp, to a new Junior Golf League.
Talbot County Parks and Recreation is again offering sports camps and classes for all ages. Sports clinics will be held in field hockey, basketball, volleyball, and indoor soccer. The County also offers popular dance classes as well as weekly summer camp offerings from June 17 – August 23. Additionally, registration for free swimming lessons through the Sink or Swim program is available through the Parks and Recreation website. For further information, visit talbotparks.org.
Talbot County Summer Camps take trips to Washington, DC, Ocean City, and various Maryland and Delaware destinations. According to Preston Peper, CPRP, Parks and Recreation Director, “Talbot County Parks and Recreation received a decommissioned school bus from Talbot County Public Schools in 2018 which eliminates the cost to rent a school bus for our summer camp program. The new bus will also allow for passenger transport during the school year for events and programs through Talbot County Parks and Recreation and will assist other user groups when needed.”
This summer, the County is also offering a two-day Exploring Aviation Drone Camp for youth on July 9 and 10 at the Talbot County Aviation Career Education (ACE) Center at Easton Airport. Participants will learn all about drone safety, basic controls, apps, coding, flying intelligent flight modes, and more. Youth will work as teams to build their own drone and compete in timed events and races. According to Micah Risher, Airport Manager, Easton Airport, “Aviation is unique and exciting. By using new technology, such as drones, we hope to introduce a new generation to aviation and inspire them to learn more about the possibilities in the aerospace industry.”
The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and lunch is included. The cost is $75 per person and is available for youth ages 10 to 14. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and a hat. For further information, visit talbotparks.org.
There are also a number of exciting things happening at Hog Neck Golf Course in Easton this summer. The Golf Course has started a PGA Junior League. According to Rich Setter, Head Golf Professional/GM at Hog Neck Golf Course, there are four teams that make up the PGA Junior League – two teams for youth ages eight to 13 and two teams for youth ages 14 to 17. The teams practice weekly and have matches June 9 through July 23 against teams from the Talbot Country Club, Prospect Bay Country Club, and Queenstown Country Club. Setter adds, “Participants not only learn about the game and improve their golf skills, but they also enjoy the fun, social team environment provided by PGA Jr. League.”
Talbot County Golf Course is also offering its 2019 Junior Golf Camp for youth ages eight to 17. Camp sessions are June 25-28, July 22-25, and August 19-22. Camp fees are $175 for each session. For further information, visit www.hogneck.com.
