ST MICHAELS, MD – From 10am–4pm on either Saturday, June 5, or Saturday, July 24, 2021 join Master Shipwrights Frank Townsend and Ed Farley for a day in the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s working Shipyard to learn traditional ship caulking techniques.
From rolling oakum to threading and making seams, participants will get a hands-on lesson while helping to caulk Maryland Dove, a reproduction of the vessel that accompanied the first European settlers to Maryland in 1634. Currently under construction at CBMM, the vessel is owned by the state of Maryland and operated and maintained by Historic St. Mary’s City. To learn more, visit marylanddove.org.
Participants are required to wear closed-toe shoes and a facial covering, are encouraged to bring a lunch and a refillable water bottle and should dress for working outdoors. The cost to participate is $55 per person, with a 20% discount offered to CBMM members.
