Traditional and Alternative Artforms Fill Galleries at the Rehoboth Art League

Exhibitition Sussex

REHOBOTH BEACH, DE – An exciting new array of exhibitions including traditional and new approaches to art will debut with an opening reception from 5-7pm on Friday, August 27, 2021 at the Rehoboth Art League’s historic Henlopen Acres campus.

A collection of juried watercolors in the Corkran Gallery, The Wonders of Watermedia, will showcase the talents of the Delaware Watercolor Society’s members in their pieces which include landscape, still life, botanicals, and even the abstract. This group, based in Rehoboth Beach, focuses on exploring, creating, and sharing the wonders of traditional watercolor and other aqueous media. This exhibition, which includes awards of excellence, will be highlighted in a free public Gallery Talk at 10am on Saturday, August 28, in the Corkran Gallery. Led by Marjorie Wuestner, on behalf of judge Christine A. Heyse, the event will discuss the selections and award winners and provide insight into the jurying process.

Concurrent to Delaware Watercolor Society’s show are several solo exhibitions also opening on August 27. Local acrylic artist Jan Crooker’s More Beyond exhibition will open in the Tubbs Gallery. This show, a collection of bright, colorful paintings produced during the pandemic, captures the artist’s memories of places while she was in isolation. While site visits were off limits to the artist, focusing on positive memories of places she had once been helped envision ‘more beyond’ her immediate situation.

In addition to exhibitions opening in more traditional artforms, the League also welcomes back Baltimore-based experimental photographer Antonio McAfee, whose Mezzanine exhibition will open in the Ventures Gallery. McAfee, who has previously won the Best in Show award at RAL’s Regional Juried Photography Exhibition, presents appropriated images in alternative processes, using 3D to provide alternate ways to view Black figures.

Finally, the Peter Marsh Homestead features Reflections, works by Laura Erickson. Erickson’s exhibition is inspired by the peacefulness found in nature. Her acrylic paintings capture the movement and texture of the clouds and sky, transforming the mood in the room and bring repose to the space, the mind, and the body. Each of these exhibitions are free and open to the public and will be on display through September 26.
