The day’s events for Memorial Day in Chestertown began with a Grave Side ceremony at Chester Cemetery by the Frank M Jarman American Legion Post 36.
At 10am the Annual Memorial Parade was viewed by many as it came down High Street. After the Parade a short program that both honored the day as well as the area’s veterans. Former Congressman Wayne Gilchrest was the speaker. His ended his speech with the poem John McCrae “In Flanders Field”.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
The Memorial Day service concluded with a laying of a wreath at the “Colored Troops” Civil War Memorial at Memorial Park.
