The Wicomico County Health Department offers these tips for a safe Halloween
Have safety in mind when selecting a costume.
● When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Any hats,
masks, wigs, and beards should also fit appropriately to prevent them from covering children’s
eyes, nose, and mouth. Obstructed vision or breathing can make trick-or-treating dangerous.
● Choose non-toxic costume makeup. Test makeup on a small patch of skin ahead of time.
● Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Consider adding reflective tape to costumes or
trick-or-treat containers.

Take precautions when trick-or-treating.
● Younger children should always go trick-or-treating with an adult.
● Older children going out on their own should go in a group and stay together. Tweens and teens
should know their planned route and when they will be arriving home.
● Everyone should walk on well-lit paths and look both ways before stepping into the street.
Carry flashlights or glow sticks to increase visibility.

Prepare your home for trick-or-treaters.
● Ensure that outdoor lights are on if you would like trick-or-treaters to visit your home.
● Remove tripping hazards from walking paths.
● Make Halloween fun for all, including those with food allergies. Also consider healthy options,
like granola bars or pretzels, or non-food options, like glow sticks or bouncy balls.
