Salisbury, MD
There is nothing like being part of a family, and part of that is the feeling of inclusion. When a child is not meeting their milestones, it can be challenging for all family members. Thankfully the Ward family, of Parsonsburg, MD, found Easterseals Children’s Therapy program, so their daughter, Scarlett, could feel the joy of inclusion. She can now be found running around the playground with her older brothers and gathering around the dinner table enjoying the same foods as the rest of the family.
“Easterseals is such a game changer. There is a world of difference in Scarlett. Her growth is eye opening,” Kelsey, Scarlett’s mom, says. “Her brothers are so helpful. They love her and want to help her. Her victories are their victories. They have a bond like no other.”
Due to weakened muscles, especially in Scarlett’s legs, and multiple hospital visits, she was falling behind developmentally. When Scarlett started receiving physical therapy with Easterseals, she was unable to crawl. Since then, she learned to walk and run, which is a huge milestone since she really enjoys playing with her big brothers. She continues to work on balance and coordination. Scarlett also receives feeding therapy to help her tolerate more textures and flavors to expand her food palette.
“When we first got the diagnosis, it was overwhelming. We felt like we were barely keeping our heads above water,” Kelsey says. “Easterseals has been there for us, not just physically but emotionally. The therapists always have the patience to work with her whether it is a great day or a bad day. They are always willing to change their plans accordingly. They are always encouraging and motivating. Scarlett loves going to therapy.”
Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore is delighted to announce that Scarlett, who has made such incredible progress, will once again serve as this year’s ambassador for their third annual “Walk With Me & 5K Fun Run Salisbury” event. It will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 7:30 a.m., at the Salisbury Elks Lodge #817 located at 401 Churchill Avenue, Salisbury, MD.
“They have truly become a part of our family through every single part of our journey. When we started this journey with the Easterseals, we didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t even know if she would be able to walk,” Kelsey says. “Easterseals therapists really have encouraged us to never give up. and I don’t think Scarlett would be where she is now without that.”
