GLASGOW, DE
Dr. Janice Nevin, who has served as president and CEO of ChristianaCare since 2014, leading its transformation from a health care system to a system that truly impacts health, will receive the Medal of Honor – atTAcK addiction’s highest honor – at the organization’s ninth annual Be a Hero Gala on October 17, 2024 near Newark.
During Dr. Nevin’s tenure in leadership, ChristianaCare initiated Project Engage, an early intervention program that links patients suffering from substance use disorders with community treatment programs, and has fostered a workplace culture that reduces the stigma associated with the disease of addiction. Dr. Nevin, who previously served as ChristianaCare’s chief medical officer, chief patient safety officer, and chair of family and community medicine, has overseen ChristianaCare’s ascension as a national health care leader in the areas of quality and safety, health equity, virtual health and value-based care.
“We are so proud to honor Dr. Nevin, who responded to the opioid epidemic with health care innovations at ChristianaCare and continues to work hard to reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorder,” said Don and Jeanne Keister, co-founders of atTAcK addiction. “To have the leader of the state’s largest health care system out front so early during the epidemic was critical to changing and saving lives.”
Previous Medal of Honor winners include former Governor Jack Markell and First Lady Carla Markell, Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long, Attorney General Kathleen Jennings, former Attorney General and Lt. Governor Matt Denn, state Sen. Stephanie Hansen, former Department of Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf, former Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay, Dr. Sandra Gibney, and Dr. Lynn Morrison, president and CEO of Brandywine Counseling & Community Services.
The Be a Hero Gala, which will honor statewide winners and celebrate those in recovery, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 17 at the Executive Banquet Center (205 Executive Drive, Newark). Nevin and additional winners will be honored for supporting individuals living with substance use disorder, their families, and those in recovery. Tickets are $125 per person.
