On February 28, 2018 just before 3:00 AM, troopers from the North East barrack responded to an area near 655 Cayots Corner Rd (MD 310) in Chesapeake City for a single vehicle collision. Upon their arrival, troopers located a silver SUV which had struck a tree and caught fire. The make, model, and registration of the SUV are unknown at this time.
The preliminary investigation revealed the SUV was traveling westbound on Cayots Corner Rd when, for an unknown reason, it left the roadway, struck a tree, and caught fire. Upon the arrival of the Cecil County Fire Department, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The driver, and sole occupant, was pronounced deceased on scene by Cecil County Emergency Services medics. The identity of the driver is unknown at this time.
A crash reconstructionist responded to the scene, and assistance from the State Highway Administration was provided for the road closure. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Cayots Corner Rd were closed between Town Point Rd and Mitton Rd for approximately three hours.
