Virginia Whittington, a certified nursing assistant and medical technician with Compass Regional Hospice, is the most recent recipient of the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Hospice Caregivers Award. Whittington was nominated by a patient’s family member, to recognize her commitment to compassionate and personalized end‐of‐life care.
Each staff member is committed to the mission of Compass Regional Hospice, which is to provide “Care on your terms” to individuals, families and the community through comprehensive, professional and compassionate end‐of‐life care and grief support.
Whittington’s commitment to providing compassionate end‐of‐life care recently was recognized by a patient’s family. The Hospice Caregivers Award nominator wrote, “She is an amazing caregiver … As if it was her own father/family member. My family and I were so happy and elated that my dad could be with such an amazing entity for his end-of-life journey.”
Whittington typically works out of the Caroline Hospice Home, 613 S. 5th Ave., Denton, where care is provided by Compass Regional Hospice.
“The time and effort that this house shows their patients is nothing short of amazing. I never had the privilege to work alongside hospice, but I am truly blown away by these women. It would be a wonderful gift for the whole house to receive recognition,” the nominator wrote.
Whittington was singled out for the care she provided to the nominator’s father. She is involved with many aspects of a patient’s hospice care, including feeding, personal care, administering medication, assuring residents are comfortable and safe, and collaborating with team members to meet a resident’s plan of care. Whittington has been providing compassionate care to Compass Regional Hospice’s patients since May 2016.
“The home was filled with the love, devotion and an amazing amount of compassion, but Virginia stood out with the love and care she gave to my dad. This was such a hard time for us, but she helped us all travel this road with the generosity of her caring spirit, the tenderness of heart and soul, and the dignity she gave him as he was heading toward the end of life,” the nominator wrote.
The Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Hospice Caregivers Award is open to physicians, nurses, social workers, bereavement counselors, hospice aides, chaplains, administrative staff and volunteers of Compass Regional Hospice who care for patients in Queen Anne’s, Kent and Caroline counties. Compass Regional Hospice is a fully licensed, independent, community-based nonprofit organization certified by Medicare and the state of Maryland and accredited by the Joint Commission.
