The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md., is hosting three free workshops for educators this summer.

The first workshop, from 10am–3:30pm Wednesday, July 11, invites educators to follow the blue crab from the Bay to the table in the hands-on Chesapeake’s Best Crab Cakes Educator Workshop. The program is designed to complement CBMM’s Chesapeake’s Best CrabCakes Immersive tour, with educators exploring the relationship between people and the blue crab and leaving with resources to implement the accompanying 5E Model Lesson in the classroom. The curriculum emphasizes Chesapeake geography, biology, and economics for students in grades PK-5. Secondary-level, informal and homeschool educators may attend as space allows.

The second program will be held from 10am–2pm Monday, July 30. In this workshop, educators will explore strategies for teaching with maps in the classroom, utilizing CBMM’s newest exhibition, Exploring the Chesapeake: Mapping the Bay. Hosted in partnership with the Maryland Geographic Alliance, this workshop is open to K-12 school-based and homeschool educators.

The final educator workshop for the summer will be held from 9am–5pm Monday, August 6. In this professional development course, hosted in partnership between CBMM and Baltimore’s Downtown Sailing Center, educators will explore engaging STEM and Ocean Literacy lessons. Open to middle school educators, all participants will leave with the Reach Educator Guide for Middle School, Modules 1-10 and earn US Sailing STEM Educator certification. The Reach modules are correlated to National Education Standards in science and math, as well as US Sailing’s Learn Sailing Right! Beginner and Intermediate. Elementary, high school, informal, and homeschool educators may attend as space allows.

Space is limited in all workshops, with advanced registration needed at bit.ly/CBMMeducator18.
