Washington College will conduct a national search for a new head sailing coach this summer. Max Kurland ’11, who served in that position for the past three seasons, will not be returning for the 2018-19 academic year.
“We want to thank Max for his three years of service as our head coach and, prior to that, his four years as an assistant coach and two seasons as a varsity student-athlete,” remarked Director of Athletics Thad Moore. “Max’s love for his alma mater and passion for sailing are without question.”
Intercollegiate sailing has been a varsity sport at Washington College since the fall of 1997. The team competes in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA), one of the most competitive conferences in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). Washington College is one of just five NCAA Division III member schools within MAISA to sponsor sailing at the varsity level. From 2008 through 2014, the Washington College sailing team qualified for the ICSA Co-Ed National Championship first round six times in seven years. The team also qualified for the ICSA Women’s National Championship semifinal in 2012.
Washington College is currently constructing a new boathouse on its existing waterfront along the Chester River, which is within a mile’s walk of the main campus. The new boathouse is expected to open this coming fall.
