ST MICHAELS, MD – On Saturday November 3, 2018, raisers, sitters, and dogs in training with the Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s Delmarva Chapter visited the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md.
During the visit, seven dogs were presented challenges that might be faced once they are placed with a blind or visually impaired person, including stepping on and off an elevator, ascending and descending winding staircases, and more.
Puppy raisers are responsible for nurturing a puppy to prepare it for guide dog training. Raisers care for young dogs and equip them with the skills needed to take on a job that will change someone’s life.
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and supporting life-changing connections between people and dogs. Guiding Eyes primarily has puppy raisers on the Eastern Seaboard, stretching from Maine to North Carolina, and west to Ohio. Each region holds its own pre-placement training, puppy classes, and puppy assessments, with local puppy raising classes held Tuesday evenings in Talbot County.
Leashed dogs are welcome on CBMM’s campus, but are not permitted during special events and festivals, with the exception of certified service dogs. Non-service dogs are also prohibited inside any exhibition buildings, or on museum vessels. Clean up bags and water are available throughout campus.
