St. Michaels Library Lunch & Learn: “Reading into Rebellion”

On Monday, January 7, 2019 at noon, the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library will host a Lunch & Learn program featuring Phillip Hesser, Ph.D. Dr. Hesser will discuss the emotional climate here in Dorchester and Talbot Counties that led to “The Phony Insurrection” of 1855 and the resulting Sabbath School Purge.

In March and April of 1855, false rumors of an impending insurrection by enslaved people placed everyone on edge, with whites and blacks alike fearing for their lives. During this period, Sabbath schools and other religious institutions for black people—both enslaved and free—were put into jeopardy because they were thought to encourage conspiracy and rebellion. Dr. Hesser’s special focus will be a Sabbath school for African Americans in St. Michaels.

The Friends of the Library invite everyone to bring their lunch or a snack to this special program and enjoy coffee and dessert on the Friends. All library programs are free and open to the public. Patrons do not need to pre-register to attend this discussion. For more information, please call the library at 410-745-5877, or visit www.tcfl.org.
