Summer is upon us and the Main Street Gallery in Cambridge is excited about “Flow” , their upcoming exhibit featuring the works of gallery artist, Laura Hofherr. Laura, a well-known polymer clay jewelry artist has recently turned her creative attention to making expressive, abstract paintings. When fashioning her earrings , bracelets and necklaces, the Cambridge artist says she always had a very clear plan in mind. But when making the non-objective, free form paintings she is currently passionate about, she abandons the planned approach and relies on the beauty of the unplanned and the accidental, guided by the artist’s hand. Using acrylic paints, sometimes with the addition of silicone, paint conditioner, house paint and other media, Laura creates her colorful abstracts on canvases which range in scale from intimate to quite large. Laura allows her colors to combine, flow, swirl and separate onto her surface, she explains. The resulting works are unique and reveal a welcome surprise of energy and movement. With the same technique Laura brings her artful outcome to various pieces of furniture as well. Her aim, she says is to create fluidity and movement in each piece she makes.

Laura, who will be showing her new work alongside that of the other gallery artist members, is a Maryland native, who divides her time between her homes in Bel Air and Cambridge. On the Eastern Shore she draws inspiration from the flowing waters of the Choptank River and the beautiful natural landscape around her.

“Flow” will open on June 28 and run through August 25, 2019. There will be two Second Saturday receptions at the gallery on July 13 and August 10, from 5-8 pm. The August 10th reception will also be a beer-tasting party in celebration of Main Street Gallery’s 8th birthday. Both receptions are free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
