The Church Hill Theatre, Inc. has been awarded a $64,674 matching funds grant MHAA: “Theatre Needs New Threads” from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority. This is one of 114 matching grants totaling $5.1 million that is being awarded to Maryland nonprofits, local jurisdictions, and other heritage tourism organizations.

Carmen Renée, the theatre’s Executive Manager says, “While the title might seem to imply that we are looking for costume donations, it actually refers to the interior fabric upgrades and related renovations we anticipate will bring renewed energy and pleasure to artists and patrons of Church Hill Theatre. Our wall coverings suffered water damage over the years from roof damage and our seat covers and stage curtains could use replacement as well. This matching grant will go a long way toward improving the theater experience for everyone!”

A full list of the 114 grantees can be found here – mht.maryland.gov/documents/PDF/MHAA/MHAA_CurrentGrantAwards.pdf

The Theatre has been closed since early March but they have been busy. During the Covid closure they have finalized website upgrades, with Mullin/Ashley, a marketing agency out of Chestertown, MD., enhanced office procedures (including safety protocols for our patrons and artists), and evaluating their costume and set storage space!

Considering that the grant is a matching grant, they are in the beginning stages of developing a fundraising plan for those matching funds. If you’d like to participate in their activities or you would like to help sponsor some portion of the renovations they would love to hear from you.
