Ocean City, Maryland – Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan is inviting all bicyclists to participate in the first ever Mayor’s Bike Ride event. The Mayor’s Bike Ride is to encourage biking in Ocean City and to provide awareness on the Town’s goal to become recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) through the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). Every year, LAB establishes a National Bike Month, Bike to Work Week, and Bike to Work Day. These events are typically held in May of each year but were delayed until September this year due to COVID-19.
On Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at 10 a.m., Ocean City will be joining the rest of the nation in celebrating the official 2020 Bike to Work Day. Whether you are a social bicyclist, an avid bicyclist, or an interested citizen, we invite you to participate in the Ocean City Mayor’s Bike Ride.
The route begins at the Ocean City Life-Saving Museum at the far south end of the Boardwalk and proceeds north on the Boardwalk to 27th Street and back to the origin totaling 4.5 miles. (The Event is Free)
Masks are required during the ride on the Boardwalk. Helmets are optional.
The Town of Ocean City is actively working to improve safety while biking in the resort community. In addition, Ocean City hopes to continue to provide better infrastructure for promoting bicycle tourism activities, improve health and recreation and decrease traffic congestion and vehicle emissions. As part of these efforts, the City Council established an official Ocean City Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee (OC BPAC) in July 2018. The OC BPAC is comprised of 10 members, including a liaison from the Town Council, several town staff members, a representative from State Highway Administration (SHA), a representative from OCDC, as well as town residents and business owners.
