Featuring three new music performances from cast members of the 2018 GCA production, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is revisited this week with GCTV’s second installment of ENCORE. A program designed to look back and discuss past shows with the personalities involved, and to enjoy new performances from the cast, this second ENCORE has set it sights on ‘Remembering Sweeney Todd.’
Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” opened to acclaim on the Garfield Center stage on April 27, 2018. It featured a tremendously talented cast, crew and production staff tackling a notoriously difficult-to-produce musical. The show features a variety of challenges in its musical score, performance style, dialects, scenic pieces and special effects, with each production aspect requiring meticulous research, planning and engineering.
Revisiting the challenges and successes of the GCA production are Director Shelagh Grasso, Music Director Julie Lawrence, Producer and Dialect Coach Sally Borghardt, Scenic Designer and Builder Carmen Grasso, Lighting Designer Kat Melton and Stage Manager Michelle Christopher. Hosting the program is ENCORE Producer Jennifer Kafka Smith, who also designed the props for the production.
“ENCORE: Remembering Sweeney Todd” also gives us new performances of songs from the show. “Wait” features vocalist Jane Copple, who played Mrs. Lovett, “Not While I’m Around,” features Copple and Natalie Lane (Toby), and “Kiss Me,” which is performed by Max Hagan (Anthony) and Shannon Whitaker (Joanna). Accompanist is Stephanie King LaMotte. For GCTV, Nic Carter is the Zoom and broadcast engineer and Steven Arnold is the program editor.
