The Fiber Arts Center Offers “Basic Sewing 101”

Objective:To develop basic machine sewing skills.

Class Description: Introduction to the wonderful world of sewing. Students will learn the basic
parts of their sewing machines including how to thread their machine, wind a bobbin, change
and insert a needle and change a presser foot. Students will also review where their controls
are for stitch type, stitch width and length, if applicable. Students must come with a working
sewing machine with a manual. A manual can be downloaded for most machines from the
internet. Please do so before class. Students will make a pillowcase. The pillowcase kits will
be available at class for a nominal cost.

You will be buying enough to allow for normal shrinkage when prewashed and ironed before
class.
– 7/8 yard for pillowcase body; ½ yard for pillowcase cuff & 1/8 yard for accent strip.
– 100% cotton fabrics should be 42-45 inches wide.

If you would like to make two pillowcases, please buy:
– 1 ½ yards for body of two pillowcases;
– 7 N. 4th St. Denton, MD 21629
– 7/8 yard for pillowcase cuff;
– ¼ yard for pillowcases’ accent strips

PLEASE PREWASH and IRON your 100% woven Cotton fabric BEFORE class. Ask a
salesperson in the fabric store for 100% woven cotton fabric. Quilting fabric is perfect as long
as it is 100% cotton.

THREAD: Please buy coordinating thread for pillowcase. None of the thread will show when
finished. Prefer Gutterman Thread 100% cotton.

– rotary cutter with sharp blade
– 6 x 24 inch clear ruler, if you have one
80/12 Universal Schmetz needle pack or 80/12 needle that works in your sewing machine.
