City of Newark Hosts 83rd Annual Memorial Day Parade

In recognition of the men and women who lost their lives in service to our country, the City of Newark will host Memorial Day events on Sunday, May 20, 2018. A ceremony including drills, the presentation of flags and patriotic music will take place on the University of Delaware Green at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., the 83rd annual Memorial Day parade will commence, starting at South College Avenue and continuing to Chapel Street. Marching units representing all service branches, veterans’ organizations, schools, and community organizations will be participating in the parade on E. Main Street.

“Each year, our community joins the rest of the nation to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives while in service to our country,” said Mayor Polly Sierer. “Newark’s Memorial Day events are meant to ensure the memory of the lives lost remain with us for generations to come, and I am grateful to the many community partners who work together to ensure this important tradition continues.”
Recognition of the Chair of Honor, intended to honor and remember the more than 81,000 soldiers identified as Missing in Action and/or Prisoners of War will be included in the ceremony. The chair has a permanent display at the City municipal building.

Free parking will be available in municipal parking lots and University of Delaware’s Pearson Hall parking lot until 4 p.m. The Trabant Center parking garage will be charging a special event rate with a maximum of $5 for the day. All parking regulations are in effect and lots not mentioned will have regular fees in effect.

The following roads will have detours and closures in effect beginning at noon and continuing until 3:30 p.m.:

South College Avenue (Park Pl. to Main St.)
Delaware Avenue (South Main St. to Academy St.)

The following roads will have detours and closures in effect beginning at 1:30 p.m. and continuing until approximately 3 p.m.:

Main Street (South College Ave. to Chapel St.)
Academy Street (Delaware Ave. to Main St.)
Chapel Street (Delaware Ave. to Main St.)
