Rehoboth Art League Celebrates the 45th Annual Members’ Fine Craft Exhibition and More

On Friday, June 15th, 2018 from 5-7 pm, the Rehoboth Art League (RAL) will host an opening reception for the “45th Annual Members’ Fine Craft Exhibition,” “Balancing Acts,” by Susan Frey, and “Femme Fatale,” by Megan Burak.

“The Members’ Fine Craft Exhibition is one of the signature shows of the art league,” says Artistic Director Jay Pastore. “It contains fine craft works created by member artists in a wide variety of media, including baskets, ceramics, fiber, glass, handmade paper, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media and wood. Over 50 artists are participating in this year’s exhibition. There will also be spotlight exhibitions by selected artisans, some of whom are award-winning artists from last year’s show. They include: glass artist Deb Appleby; ceramicists Wes Stack, Rosanne Smith and Susan Gladstone; fiber artists Betsey Von Dreele and Irina Iakoma; wood artist Michael Quattrociocchi, and mixed media artist Peter Emanuel.”

Awards will be given for exceptional works. This year’s awards judge is Stewart Watson. Ms. Watson is an artist, a mother, a curator, an educator, a volunteer, a community advocate, and an Awesome Foundation Baltimore Trustee. She is both a founder and the Executive Director of AREA 405, Baltimore’s best gallery in 2014. She is also a founder and owner of Oliver Street Studios, an artist community, and works in the Station North Arts and Entertainment District in Baltimore.

Ms. Watson will present a gallery talk, beginning at 3:15pm just before the opening reception, to discuss the overall exhibition as well as her award choices. Participating artists will also have the opportunity to discuss their works.

“Balancing Acts,” a solo exhibition by last year’s Members’ Fine Arts Exhibition’s ‘Best in Show’ award winning artist Susan Frey will be held in the Venture’s Gallery. “Balancing Acts” is a new series of acrylics and mixed media works. According to Frey, “So many things in our lives revolve around the act of balancing. Or not balancing! Years ago I had a long bout with vertigo. Some of the works in this exhibit express those dizzying sensations.”

High school provided the opportunity for Frey to work with talented teachers who guided her into The School of Visual Arts, NYC, and later to SUNY at Farmingdale, where she earned a degree in advertising, art & design. Since then she has worked with three advertising firms in New York.

Also opening, at the Homestead, is “Femme Fatale,” with works by Berlin, Maryland, artist Megan Burak. A 2015 graduate from Salisbury University, Burak believes that every woman is a “femme fatale” in her own way. Her exhibition will feature a series of portrait oil paintings showing women who individually redefine femininity and how it inspired their power.

The opening reception is sponsored by Dogfish Head. All three exhibitions run through July 22nd. The Rehoboth Art League is located at 12 Dodds Lane, in Henlopen Acres, DE. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm, and Sunday, noon – 4pm.
