On Sunday, September 30, from 2-4pm, the Rehoboth Art League (RAL) is hosting a “Closing Artists’ Reception” at the Homestead for their “Coastal Autumn Plein Air Exhibition,” currently on view at the Homestead. “Plein air” revolves around an artist experiencing painting and drawing in an outdoor setting. Its history goes back for centuries but it was truly developed into an art form by the French Impressionists.
Many of the seventeen artists who recently took part in a plein air event hosted by the art league will be on hand to share their experience in creating the nearly forty works in this exhibition. These artists were juried into the event based upon a review of their previous plein air work. From designated locations in the Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, and Bethany Beach areas, each had up to five days to paint scenes that embody the natural beauty or culture of our coastal community. The artists then chose two of their best works to be entered into this exhibition, all of which were eligible to receive and award. Plein air artist Brian Murphy served as both the artist selection juror and the exhibition awards judge.
Artist Jacalyn Beam received the “Best in Show” award for her work “On the Canal.”
Other award winners include: J. Stacy Rogers (Best Maritime Award), Maggii Sarfaty (Best Townscape), Michelle Marshall (Best Use of Light), and Cheryl Wisbrock (Judge’s Choice). These award winning works were offered at live auction as part of a ticketed event that took place at the league on September 21. From October 19 – November 26, 2018, a special exhibition of other works created during the September plein air event will take place in Corkran Gallery. The opening reception for that exhibition will be held on Friday, October 19, from 5-7pm.
