During a meeting Monday night, Newark City Council voted to cancel the July 4th Liberty Day Celebration and Fireworks display for this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The health and safety of our community, spectators, first responders and staff weighed heavily on our decision to cancel this year’s July 4th Liberty Day Celebration and Fireworks display,” said Newark Mayor Jerry Clifton. “We are looking forward to when we can come together as a community and celebrate all the events and activities that make Newark a great place to live, work and play.”
Cancellation of the Fireworks will also represent an estimated $35,000 savings in direct cost to the City, not including overtime pay. Newark Parks and Recreation will be working to create other activities to celebrate the birth of our nation while following all federal, state and local public health guidelines for COVID-19 and social distancing.
