Information from MD DNR Regarding State Parks – May 8, 2020

Parks

Dear Maryland State Park Visitors,

In accordance with federal guidelines and state directives pertaining to COVID-19, we want to share important information about Maryland State Parks.

Here’s what we are doing:

-We are implementing additional cleaning procedures, according to federal guidelines, such as more stringent and frequent cleaning of restrooms.

-We are postponing and canceling programs and events to help keep visitors safe.

-We have temporarily closed to the public some areas where people may congregate, including all visitor centers, administrative buildings, many concessions, all shelters, as well as all nature/interpretive centers we manage.

-Some parks are utilizing portable toilets at this time rather than opening park restrooms.

-Please visit the Department of Natural Resources FAQ for more information about specified activities in State Parks.

We are monitoring the situation. As conditions change, so may our policies on park visitation and overnight stays. We will keep you informed of any changes moving forward.

State Park Operating Status:

-Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park: Closed

-Portions of the Houck Area of Cunningham Falls State Park: Closed

-All Full-Service Cabins, Mini-Cabins and other Overnight Lodging: Closed

-Camping: Camping is available at certain State Parks. We are opening campgrounds around the state via a multi-phase process, involving the preparation of facilities for visitors, opening restrooms and bathhouses, and bringing seasonal staff online to manage the safety and well-being of visitors. A schedule of campground openings will be posted here soon.
Here’s how you can help:

-Enjoy your beautiful State Parks, however parks are not for social gathering. Parks are for individuals and immediate families at present time. Do not engage in other social gathering in parks. Limit your group to fewer than 10 people and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from other visitors.

-Pack extra soap or hand sanitizer to be safe. Please take into consideration the health of others when spending time outdoors.

-If you are sick or have been sick over the past two weeks, please stay home to recuperate.

-Avoid popular areas where people may congregate and avoid larger groups, in general.

-If the parking lot is full when attempting to visit a park, leave and either visit a different approved location, or return home and visit at another time when the park is not busy.

-Long distance travel is discouraged, unless it is essential. Please visit a park close to your home.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility. We appreciate your support of Maryland State Parks as we all work together to keep each other safe.
