REHOBOTH BEACH, DE – The process of using pen and ink to make a drawing is practically as old as art itself, dating back to 7th and 8th century China. It is one of the most visually intense and compositionally complex forms of drawing. At the same time, aside from pencil, pen and ink drawing is probably the most portable, convenient, and low-cost form of art making. All you need is a pen and a piece of paper, and you’re ready to create!
If you would like to learn this wonderful medium, come check out the online class “Discovering Pen & Ink” taught by Dolores Andrew at the Rehoboth Art League. This three-day class is scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, August 18, 19 and 20, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Once you have been introduced to pen and ink, you will appreciate its fascination to those who work with it. Although shapes are expressed in the medium, pen and ink is a linear technique. We will use lines to create shapes, light and shade as well as texture and value. Using the Zoom platform, as we work in the simple-to-challenging exercises, gradually a distinctive technique will develop for each of us. Those who work in other media often find that working in pen and ink also improves their drawing skills.
Many handouts will be shared as well as information about different pens available, and other surfaces available to you. Whether you want to “create art,” or just have fun and sketch, pen and ink will be a valuable tool to add to your drawing skills. The cost of the class is $135 for members and non-members.
Registration is required for all classes. To register go to www.rehobothartleague.org or contact the Art League’s Education Programs Director at paula@rehobothartleague.org or call 302-227-8408 ext. 112. All registered students will receive an invitation by email the day before the class with a link to join the class on Zoom. To use Zoom you just need an internet connected computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone and a webcam or built-in camera on your computer as well as a computer microphone.
