ADAM

Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on March 5, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “Adam,” an intimate drama about two women each trapped by their own destiny, who seek refuge in flight and denial.

Abla runs a modest local bakery from her home in Casablanca where she lives alone with her 8-year-old daughter Warda. Their routine of housework and homework is interrupted one day by a knock on the door. It is Samia, a young woman looking for a job and a roof over her head. The little girl is immediately taken with the newcomer, but her mother initially refuses to allow a pregnant stranger into their home. Gradually, however, Abla’s resolve softens and Samia’s arrival begins to offer all of them the prospect of a new life. The film world-premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and represented Morocco at the 2020 Oscars. [2020, Morocco, 98 min, Rated: NR, Arabic with English subtitles].

“Variety” writes, “A beautifully made, character-driven little gem that knows when and how to touch all the right buttons.” “Awards Daily” pens, “’Adam’ resonates through this profound depiction of female solidarity, opening up a necessary dialogue about women in oppressive societies with compelling grace and heartfelt empathy”

Screening times are 2 pm on Fri (Mar 5), 5 pm on Sat (Mar 6), 1 pm & 3:30 pm on Sun (Mar 7), 3:15 pm on Wed (Mar 10) and 2 pm on Thu (Mar 11). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. MY SALINGER YEAR

Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on March 5, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “My Salinger Year,” a beautifully filmed drama about a college grad who takes a clerical job working for the literary agent of a renowned, reclusive writer.

In New York City’s late nineties, a young aspiring writer (played by Margaret Qualley) lands a day job working for the literary agent of J.D. Salinger. While her eccentric and old-fashioned boss (played by Sigourney Weaver) tasks her to process Salinger’s voluminous fan mail, she struggles to find her own voice. [2021, Canada, 101 min, Rated: R].

“Jason Di Rosso of “ABC News” says, “A gentle, compassionate film about a young woman’s entrance into an adult world where secrets – both professional and personal – reveal themselves slowly, and occasionally with devastating impact.” Joseph Walsh of “The Arts Desk” writes, “the film writer Philippe Falardeau’s gentle adaptation is full of charm and intelligence.”
