The past few years, we have all been through a lot and it has taught us the importance of taking care of ourselves. Now is a good time to pause and reflect. As we approach May, Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to make sure we recognize a difficult truth: Nearly one in five Americans lives with a mental health condition, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Likewise, suicide touches whole communities: anyone, anywhere, and at any time. But it is not inevitable. There is hope. Each person who dies by suicide leaves behind people who knew them, along with the impact of suicide and the bereavement that follows.  We all have a role to play in preventing suicide; to learn more about what you can do, visit www.samhsa.gov/suicide . Someone dies from suicide every 11 minutes, and for the first time in recent generations, life expectancy is decreasing due to suicide, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

You don’t have to be suicidal or in crisis to call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. People call to talk about lots of things: substance abuse, economic worries, relationships, sexual identity, illness, getting over abuse, depression, mental and physical illness, and loneliness. Here’s more about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline:

  • You are not alone in reaching out. In 2021, the Lifeline received 3.6 million calls, chats, and texts.
  • The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a network of more than 200 state and local call centers supported by HHS through SAMHSA.
  • Calls to the Lifeline are routed to the nearest crisis center for connections to local resources for help.
  • Responders are trained counselors who have stopped over 90 percent of suicide attempts or ideation among callers.

If you or someone you love is struggling with decreased mental wellness or suicidal thoughts, here are some steps you can take:  Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to talk to a caring professional.  For additional information about our Color Fun Run event at Kylan Barn, call Jessica Taylor @ 443-695-0548.  A Huge THANK YOU to our partners for making this event possible: Affiliated Sante Group, Behind The Line, Jesse Klump Memorial Fund, Maryland Coalition of Families, Walk Wicomico, and Worcester Warriors Against Addiction, Inc.
