CAMBRIDGE, MD – Like a wind born messenger announcing the Swedish Midsummer, Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware, arrives in Cambridge, Md. to offer sails on Friday, June 14 through Sunday, June 16, 2019 from Long Wharf at the Cambridge Yacht Basin, Two Yacht Club Drive. Climb aboard for a unique hands-on experience at the intersection of adventure and education, hauling lines, singing chanteys or simply enjoying the sail. Discover the remarkable story behind this magnificent full scale replica of the armed merchant ship that founded New Sweden (now Delaware) in 1638.
Start your weekend early with a 2.5 hour afternoon or evening sail on Friday, June 14 from 1-3:30 pm and 5-7:30 pm. Saturday sails are 10am-12:30 pm and 5-7:30 pm. Sunday sails are planned at 10am and 2pm. Picnics and beverages are welcome (no glass containers except wine bottles permitted). For the more adventurous, Kalmar Nyckel offers a Pirate Sail on Sunday, June 16, from 10 am to 12:30 pm, for salty fun with a crew of pirates and colonial sailors. Pirate tales and scavenger hunts are part of the fun. Costumes are welcome for guests! Kalmar Nyckel was never a pirate vessel, but the crew loves to play the part for these events.
Boating enthusiasts are encouraged to see the arrival of the “Queen of the Tall Ship fleet” on the Choptank River on June 13 or 14. You can track Kalmar Nyckel’s voyage online up to 24 hours in advance via one of several online vessel finder applications.
Kalmar Nyckel’s summer schedule includes visits to Norfolk Harborfest; Historic New Castle, Del.; Pirate Festival in Wilmington, Del.; Provincetown and Salem, Mass.; Kingston and Yonkers, N.Y.; and Downrigging Weekend Tall Ships Festival in Chestertown, Md.
The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation is a non-profit educational organization with the mission of preserving and promoting the cultural and maritime heritage of Delaware and the Delaware Valley for the education and enrichment of all.
