Chestertown, MD – Sumner Hall is pleased to announce the observance of Legacy Day 2019 in downtown Chestertown. Celebrating Historic African American Churches of Kent County is our theme for this sixth annual observance. The Legacy Day Committee is proud to honor those whose history is unknown or forgotten by so many; this community event is a time when all residents of Kent County recognize their shared history and have a great time doing it!

Most activities take place on Saturday, August 17th but there are two preview events scheduled earlier in the month. On Friday, August 2nd at 5 pm at Bordley History Center in Chestertown historian Bill Leary will share stories about 24 historic African American Churches in Kent County and view the exhibition, Amazing Grace: The Kent County Way that highlights the 24 historic churches. A wine & cheese reception follows. Seating is limited so plan to arrive early!

On August 10th, at 2:00 pm, an Old Time Gospel Sing will take place at Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Saturday’s activities include a Genealogy Workshop at the Kent County Library; Children’s Activities at RiverArts’ KidSpot and Sumner Hall; a Gospel Concert featuring recording artist, Dr. Anthony Brown, at Bethel A.M.E. Church; a Parade down High Street; live music by Quiet Fire featuring local artist, Jasper Hackett; food and craft vendors in Fountain Park; and dancing in the street with DJ Lonnie Butcher. Legacy Day T-Shirts are available through Contagious Creations as described on Sumner Hall’s website.
