NEWARK, DE – The second phase of the Tri-Valley Trail in White Clay Creek State Park has been completed and is open to the public. The 1.1-mile trail links the Pike Creek area and the City of Newark.
The newest trail in Delaware’s state park system is also the first continuous trail that allows visitors with mobility challenges to enjoy the opportunity to hunt, fish, and participate in accessible hay wagon rides. A primitive camping area in the park/along the trail is currently under construction and expected to be complete in October.
“Delaware State Parks and our trail systems add value to our personal health, the economy, and tourism,” said DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin. “Regardless of ability, everyone deserves the chance to recreate and enjoy the outdoors, and DNREC could not be more proud to provide these opportunities to our visitors.”
“Trails like this support a healthy lifestyle to those who want to walk, ride and enjoy the outdoors and they also support economic development,” said U.S. Senator Tom Carper. “People want to live and work in areas with recreational activity and where they can enjoy the beautiful, peaceful outdoors. I am proud to support the federal programs that funded this trail so that more people can enjoy our wonderful State Parks.”
The first phase of the Tri-Valley Trail was completed in 2017, and was initiated under Former Governor Jack Markell’s First State Trails and Pathways Initiative.The Recreation Trails Program (RTP), a grant program of the Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, provided 80 percent of the project funding.
