This year’s One Maryland One Book selection The Island of Sea Women by New York Times best-selling author Lisa See is now available to check out from both the Easton and St. Michaels branches. One Maryland One Book is Maryland’s only statewide community reading program—like one big book club. It’s an opportunity for people to read a good book, then come together for thoughtful discussion. Keynote Speaker: John Stauffer, Professor of English and African and African American Studies at Harvard University and author of GIANTS: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln; The Black Hearts of Men, co-winner of the Frederick Douglass Book Prize and the Lincoln Prize 2nd Place winner; and Picturing Frederick Douglass, a Lincoln Prize finalist. Activities for the day will include a virtual tour of The Hill and of Frederick Douglass’ D.C. home. Children will be able to register for free coloring books that they can pick up at the library. Jon Meacham, His Truth Is Marching On: John Lewis and the Power of Hope

Jon Meacham will be talking about his new biography of John Lewis. Meacham calls Lewis “as important to the founding of a modern and multiethnic twentieth- and twenty-first-century America as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and Samuel Adams were to the initial creation of the Republic itself in the eighteenth century.” Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer. The author of The New York Times bestsellers Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, Franklin and Winston, Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush, and The Soul of America, Meacham is a contributing writer to The New York Times Book Review, a contributing editor to Time, and a fellow of the Society of American Historians. Kenyatta Berry will be in conversation with Jackie Copeland, director of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, about her work and contributions to the groundbreaking 1619 Project published by The New York Times. She was the 2019 Honorary Chair for Preservation Week and named a “Newsmaker” in American Libraries magazine. Kenyatta Berry’s TV host job on Genealogy Roadshow (PBS) generated enormous buzz surrounding her insight, understanding, and expertise by colleagues, genealogy organizations, media, and supporters alike.
