“Sublime – A Horticultural Exploration,” taking place at the Homestead, is a tribute to the essence and beauty of the plant world. Horticulture has played an important role at the RAL ever since the Corkrans first cultivated the Homestead Garden in the 1930s. Except for a few variations the garden has remained the same for decades. Member Artists submitted over sixty works of art for consideration by the juror and twenty works were selected for the show. The juror for this exhibition was Carl Goldhagen, former Professor of Art at the Salisbury University, Salisbury, MD.
The Corkran Gallery will house two solo exhibitions, “New Work” by Nick Serratore and “Simplicity” by Howard Eberle, both well known Delaware artists. For this exhibition, pastel artist Serratore harnesses representations of the land to demonstrate the effects of sunlight and spatial depth upon a scene. His use of color and blending techniques create moody, atmospheric landscapes that frame almost abstracted fields of saturated light and color. Several works showcased will reflect a new exploration of the artist’s evolvement. For “Simplicity,” Howard Eberle celebrates the philosophy of Japanese minimalism in creating watercolors that fall outside of tradition in both style and execution. In this selection of new and award winning works, Eberle challenges himself visually to create paintings that are understated, the goal being to refrain from adding that which is not absolutely necessary. In doing so it is the artist’s intention and hope that viewers experiences a moment of quietude in their otherwise busy lives.
In the Tubbs Gallery, works by photographer Peter Treiber from his series “Ethereal Luminescence” will
be on display. “Ethereal Luminescence” is an ongoing series of abstract, expressionistic photographs originally created at a light show. Treiber continues to expand this series by taking shots at fireworks shows, urban street scenes and amusement parks. Through abstraction, Treiber captures the drama and excitement of these vibrant and colorful public places that we all enjoy so much; creating a mesmerizing, symphonic explosion of color, light and motion.
Rounding out this new set of exhibitions, artist Ruri Yi will present her work in the Venture’s Gallery. Born in Deagu, South Korea and raised in Seoul, she currently lives in Baltimore, MD. She studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In her exhibition “Untitled,” she addresses images that reflect her daily life. While looking at her surroundings she tries to see form, color and shape. As she analyzes them, she transforms them into varied surfaces, reinterpreting elements of the urban landscape. She ultimately produces a simplified version of how she sees the world.
All five exhibits will be on display through June 10. The Rehoboth Art League is located at 12 Dodds Lane, in Helopen Acres. Gallery hours are Monday– Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday noon – 4:00 p.m.. The opening reception is free and open to the public, and is generously sponsored by Dogfish Head and the Blue Moon restaurant.
